Hosting an Inclusive Easter

With Easter fast approaching, many families will be planning their annual Easter activities! Whether your family chooses to host an Easter egg hunt or join in on a community parade, it’s important that we make these activities and events accessible for children and adults alike. We’ve done some digging and asked about others experiences when participating in Easter festivities and here’s a few tips we’ve picked up along the way on how we can make these events a safe and equitable experience;

Get creative with your sensory aids!

If you or your child are looking to join in on an Easter bonnet parade this is a great opportunity to turn a fun craft project into a productive sensory tool. Noise cancelling headphones can be disguised under the biggest and brightest of bonnets and allow you or your child access to an important sensory aid and help you enjoy the festivities better.

Change up the tradition of chocolate!

With the popularity of self fillable eggs, it’s never been easier to make accommodations for the special people in our lives with restrictions to their diets! This could be due to allergies or medical conditions such as diabetes. No one should have to miss out on the joy of an Easter egg hunt so filling these eggs with small toys or things you know your friends and family will enjoy is an easy and simple way to avoid chocolate or sweets this easter.

Colour code to prevent chaos!

Designating a colour to each child during an Easter egg hunt can help create a fair playing field for those who may be a bit slower at retrieving these fantastic treats! You can even try attaching helium balloons to the eggs (in the same colour of course) to ensure that the prizes are easier to handle and pick up for wheelchair users.

Encourage all types of participation.

Some children may not want to dress up or hunt for easter eggs and that’s okay! There’s many ways we can participate in Easter celebrations including easter themed crafts like colouring in or story writing. Letting children explore different avenues of participation and creating a welcoming environment is just as important as the Easter Bunny themselves.

Take a load off!

Remember to take breaks for snacks, hydration or even just some quiet time. These moments are just as special as the day itself.

From the team at AkinCare, we wish you a safe and wonderful Easter!
